** Announcing a New Postgraduate Course,
commencing October 2002 **
Degree of Doctor of Education (Ed.D) in
Applied Disability Studies
University of Sheffield, School of Education
The new EdD in Applied Disability Studies examines
debates about the nature of impairment and
disability and links these to current policies,
practices and experiences within contemporary
education. The Program is closely informed by
the top-rated research of members of the
Inclusive Education and Equality Research Centre.
Our research and teaching are based on a
commitment to theorising and resisting
oppression of disabled people and we place
emphasis on affecting positive social change. The
EdD Program engages with radical writings
(often by disabled people themselves) that
illustrate the social and personal impacts of
disablement. It provides a unique opportunity to
develop understandings of disability, and skills
for facilitating change in accordance with disabled
people’s own agendas.
The Program aims to:
oExamine and critically evaluate contemporary
theoretical and empirical debates about the
political nature of impairment and disability;
oExplore the wider implications of these
debates for disabled people’s lives
oEngage with models of disability research in
the context of education
oConsider how the study of disability and
education is also the study of society and its
values
In the School of Education’s Inclusive Education
and Equality Research Centre we have a lively
group of disabled and non-disabled researchers
who study disability, democracy and inclusion in
relation to educational issues and settings. We will
encourage you to think about what you want to
get out of the program – and whether this is as
straight forward as finding out what applied
disability studies is all about or as complex of
evolving new policies and practices – we are sure
you will find the experience a stimulating one.
The Ed.D comprises taught provision based
around residential weekends, incorporating
structured units plus a thesis involving sustained
research on an issue of your choice. The Program
is designed to be broad and flexible so that it will
be relevant to people from a range of personal
and professional backgrounds. It is especially
tailored to suit those seeking to study part-time
or as distance learners.
We particularly encourage disabled people to
apply.
