Hi, Folks,
Stu Weibel presented this highly useful compilation which will hopefully help
dispelling any confusion as it may still exist or arise in these areas.
Incidentally, for the restricted area of library cataloging, there has been
some recent discussion on principles of a more content-related character.
The IFLA "Functional Requirements" have also been discussed in metadata circles
but mainly by libraries. They address the question of "What are the purposes of
catalogs?". In order to straighten out conceptual differences, we have drafted a
list of features in a non-technical language, not referring to data elements or
entities and such matters, and have done this in English and German (some
American colleages have helped with the English version). Somehow this might
complement Stu's paper, for the question "What are the purposes of metadata"
may still come up occasionally.
