CALL FOR PAPERS
POETICS OF THE TEXT
7 - 8 June, 2002
In the light of a gradual shifting of emphasis from the radically free
(postmodern?) textuality to a more traditional view of the artistic form, =
the
conference aims to investigate the relationship between the two crucial te=
rms
"poetics" and "text". While the term "poetics" has traditionally been
associated with the system, organisation, structure, the term "text" has
come to express extreme citationality which was to subvert any rational
organisation of the world, seeing it as a result of free play of signifier=
s. The
following are the relevant questions that emerge from this shift: Is the v=
iew of
the artistic text as a playful semiotic artifact tenable in the after-post=
modern
period? Is it not time for the aesthetics to look back and attempt to come=
to
terms with the concept of the form or structure again, to re-value the ter=
m
"the work of art" as a connector between the semiotic and the ontological
dimensions of artistic texts? If yes, what particular lessons have been
learned from the "rule of textuality"?
In addition to the primary focus of the conference, the contact between th=
e
poetic and the textual, the papers may also address the overlap of the
poetic/textual to other fields, e.g.:
- linguistics,
- general semiotics,
- translation studies,
- philosophy,
- gender and cultural studies
- education, etc.
