Following up on our highly successful conference last year, CODEP
(Conflict,
Development and Peace Network) is once again organising an international
conference to be held in London on 12-14 June. The conference title is
"Exclusion and Identity: The Politics of Rights, Race, and Religion"
(for
further details please see the Conference Proposal below).

The Conference will be a major gathering of key people involved in
policy,
academia, and practice from around the world. It will explore such
crucial
themes as failed states, the role of the media in conflict, the
politicisation of religion, diasporan activities, and ethnic cleansing.
Keynote speakers will come from as far away as Indonesia, and there will
be
up to 15 workshops exploring many of these issues in detail.

If you have an idea for a workshop, or you would like to do one, please
do
not hesitate to contact us as soon as possible. The deadline for
submissions
is Thursday 2 May. Workshops will last one-and-a-half hours, with the
emphasis being on attendee participation. See below for the various
workshop
themes currently under consideration. Please e-mail your proposals,

CONFLICT, DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE NETWORK

2002 CONFERENCE PROPOSAL

Exclusion and Identity: The Politics of Rights, Race, and Religion
21st Century Trends in War and Peace - Experience and Response

12 - 14 June 2002
Brunei Gallery, School of Oriental and African Studies
Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, London, WC1H 0XG

September 11th. The bombing of Afghanistan. The Zimbabwe elections. The
Bradford riots. Milosovic's trial. How did you react to these events?
What shaped your views? Who did you listen to?

This groundbreaking conference will look at how our opinions and
perceptions
are shaped and what this means for the work we do in the field of
conflict,
development and peace.

The conference will bring together people from all walks of life.
Those
working with disadvantaged communities in the UK. Journalists, writers
and
broadcasters from both the UK and across the developing world. Human
and
civil rights activists. Refugees living the UK. Representatives of
diaspora organisations and NGOs. Political analysts and academics.

The conference will challenge many of our assumptions and rhetoric. It
will
discover where there is difference and where common ground exists in our
understanding of conflict and peace, and the ways to build peace.

The conference will pose hard questions. Have international human rights
become discredited? Can diaspora organisations offer things that
international NGOs cannot? Is there such a thing as a neutral religious
organisation? Does the media perpetuate stereotypes? Who defines failed
states?

Conference Process

There will be a plenary speech at the beginning each day. However, most
of
the conference will be in the form of small working groups which will
explore these questions in some detail.

CODEP will appoint a peace cabinet from among conference participants.
At
the end of this conference the group will present its findings on where
points of difference and where common ground exists. It will also
suggest
practical steps that could be taken to improve the way we work.

Theme streams

International Human Rights - Diasporas - Race and Identity - Redefining
