Press Release
28 March 2002
"Building Together: We can be successful when we try" is the theme of a
breath taking historical photographic display that is being exhibited to
members of the public, at the Hammersmith Town Hall and Fulham Central
Library.
The organisers present comprehensive photographic evidence, documenting the
extensive community development work of Dr Vince Hines and The Vince Hines
Foundation (VHF) in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, spanning
over three decades - 1971-2002.
The Event is planned in association with the London Borough of Hammersmith
and Fulham Festival 2002, and will be on view until 22nd April.
The Exhibition is made up of over 250 photographs, covering five areas of
work: Management and Administration; Indoor Activities; Outdoor Activities;
Profile; Networking and Partnership.
"BUILDING TOGETHER": We Can Be Successful When We Try", was clearly the
motivation of Vince and his colleagues in 1975, when they founded the Vince
Hines Foundation, a registered national educational charity. Vince, an
African born in Jamaica in 1942, immigrated to Britain in 1961.
With the support of a consistent Team of dedicated members of the
Community-men and women of varying colours, cultures, creeds and political
persuasions, many thousands of ordinary people in real need benefited from
the community development work of Dr Vince Hines.
The Exhibition demonstrates pioneering work of significant proportion
during the latter part of the twentieth century, which was and is still of
significant social values to Londoners. The strength of this work
generated across Britain. It influenced our multi-cultural communities, on
the basis of self-help for community development and changed lives for good.
The evidence presented, as seen through the eyes of history, clearly
demonstrated that Dr Hines and The Vince Hines Foundation are two of
London's important success stories. The Foundation is based in the London
Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham since its inception.
Zulu Publications, Hammersmith and Fulham Council, North Fulham New Deal for
Communities (NDC) Partnership and Connexions-New Start, London West support
the Exhibition.
