Lectureships in Computer Science (ref: 02066/SR)
Queen Mary is a research-led institution and priority may be given to
applicants whose research interests strengthen current work in the
Department of Computer Science on computer systems, information
retrieval, or human-computer interaction especially computer-mediated
communication. Candidates whose work extends or complements that of
our other research groups are also welcome: these areas are computer
vision; decision support and risk analysis; and logic and foundations
of computing.
There may be up to 5 appointments, of which two may be at a senior
level. The vacancies in part follow HEFCE's award of additional
student numbers for delivery of the innovative Open and Distance
Learning (ODL) degree programme in Computer Science. It is planned
that new staff and some existing staff will split their teaching
duties between the full-time and part-time programmes.

In addition, applications are invited for two full-time, research
appointments in the ODL Unit which works with business partners and
trade unions to provide degree-level studies part-time to mature
students. It is at the forefront of innovation in research and
development of open learning programmes of study which combine
residential and distance learning supported by virtual-learning
environments and online tools. The ODL Unit works closely with active
research groups within the Department of Computer Science and aims to
expand research activities in common areas of expertise. Contracts for
the research posts will be for a period of 3 years initially.
Salary (pro-rata) will be determined according to qualifications and
experience within the ranges 20,470 to 32,537 for a
lectureship, 34,158 to 38,603 for a readership, and a minimum
of 39,493 for a Chair, 30,819 to 38,603 for the Senior
Research Fellowship and 17,626 to 26,491 for the Research
Assistant post. In
addition London Allowance is paid at 2,134.
Informal enquiries may be made to the Head of Department, Professor
Malcolm MacCallum (e-mail: [log in to unmask], Tel: +44 (0) 20 7882
5213). Enquiries relating to the ODL degree programme and for the
research appointments may be made to Dr. Stephen Sommerville (e-mail:

Further particulars of all appointments are obtainable from
http://www.dcs.qmul.ac.uk/job_info/ or from David
Irving, Academic Administrator, Department of Computer Science, Queen
Mary, University of London, Mile End Road, London E1 4NS to whom
