Reality meets Science Fiction when the Computing Department at Lancaster
University hosts a 3-day celebration with Stelarc on May 8th, 9th and 10th
2002 in Lancaster, UK. Stelarc, world-renowned Performance Artist and
technophile, will be presenting his latest research titled ALTERNATE
BODIES: ZOMBIES, CYBORGS AND AVATARS, which includes a presentation,
workshop and talk with the artist, and concludes with ART CELS, a late
night performance art party at Lancaster=92s historic Town Hall. The
university=92s Cybernetics group and Folly, a locally based media
organisation are planning the events, which expect to draw a crowd of over
500 people. The event website is http://www.art-cels.com
Stelarc will open the celebrations on May 8th with a presentation titled,
ALTERNATE BODIES: ZOMBIES CYBORGS AND AVATARS, from 2 PM to 4 PM in the
George Fox Building at Lancaster University. In his presentation, Stelarc
will explore alternate body interfaces, demonstrating a muscle stimulation
system for remote choreography of the body. The presentation is free and
open to the public.
HOMOPOLYBOTS: BUILDING MODULAR HUMANS workshop will take place at Lancaster
University=92s Conference Centre, on May 9th from 9 AM to 4 PM. The
HOMOPOLYBOTS workshop aims to bring together researchers and students to
discuss particular technical and ethical problems and questions associated
with creating modular humans. The panel of distinguished guests includes:
Stelarc; Professor Alan Dix (Lancaster, HCI); and, Dr. Jen Allanson
(Lancaster, Biosensory Feedback). As well, participants are encouraged to
demonstrate devices that provide solutions to human-computer communication
and motion during the Gadget Show. Participants must register their
interest via the web.
Folly, a Lancaster based media arts organisation, is hosting STELARC SPEAK,
an open talk with the Stelarc, from 2 PM to 4 PM at Folly, in Lancaster
(across from the castle, www.folly.co.uk). Professional performance / live
artists are invited to meet with Stelarc and debate issues of interest
relating to artistic performance and the human-computer interface. Hester
Reeve, a Lancaster-based live artist and lecturer in Art Theory, will chair
the forum. Participants are encouraged to register their interest ASAP
since numbers are restricted to 35.
The celebration concludes with the grand finale, ART CELS, an enormous
Performance Art Party and open stage event, which will take place from 8 PM
to 1 AM in the Ashton Hall of Lancaster=92s historic Town Hall. ART CELS is =
a
licensed event (18+ only) and is open to the public. Event organisers hope
that ART CELS will bring together artists and technologists to discuss and
display the future of computing and performance art in human-computer
communication. Several open side stages will be made available during the
event to encourage audience participation, and local DJ Brains and London
DJ Rob Gear will be keeping the dance floor hopping. Organisers are seeking
participants, and an OPEN CALL for artists is available on the event
website. As well, organisers invite technophiles to display their wares
during the event and invite participants and onlookers to come in fancy
dress.
Information regarding ticketed events, registering for workshops, the Open
Call to Artists, and costs can be found on the website at http://www.art-

UNIVERSITY BACKGROUND: The Computing Department at Lancaster University is
a leading British computer science department with research interests that
include distributed multimedia systems, mobile computing, software systems
engineering, interactive systems and natural language processing. We offer
fully accredited BSc degree schemes in Computer Science, Computer Science
with Software Engineering and Computer Science with Multimedia Systems, as
well as a number of joint degrees that combine Computer Science with other
disciplines. At postgraduate level we offer an advanced MSc in Distributed
Interactive Systems, an MRes in Design and Evaluation of Advanced
Interactive Systems and a PhD programme.
STELARC BACKGROUND: Stelarc, an Australian artist, has performed
extensively in Japan, Europe and the USA- including new music, dance
festivals and experimental theatre. He has used medical instruments,
prosthetics, robotics, Virtual Reality systems and the Internet to explore
alternate, intimate and involuntary interfaces with the body. Recently for
Kampnagel, Stelarc completed EXOSKELETON- a pneumatically powered 6-legged
walking machine actuated by arm gestures. In 1999 he was re-appointed as a
Senior Research Scholar for the Faculty of Art and Design at the Nottingham
Trent University. Stelarc joined the Digital Research Unit in the School
Art and Design when it was first formed and has been involved in series of
experimental projects in conjunction with the Centre for Computational
Neuroscience and Robotics at the University of Sussex including Sci-art:
Bio-robotic Choreography. This
unique research project rings together artists, computer programmers and
technicians to explore the relationship between humans and machines. He is
this year=92s closing plenary speaker at CHI 2002. His art is represented by=
the Sherman Galleries in Sydney. http://www.stelarc.va.com.au/
