Job vacancies at the History Data Service, UK Data Archive, University of
Essex
The History Data Service is participating in two innovative projects funded
by the Joint Information Systems Committee - a demonstrator geo-data portal
for tertiary education, and a demonstrator gazetteer server. Both projects
are being led by EDINA at the Edinburgh University Data Library, and another
five members of staff will be based there.
Applications are invited for the following three posts:
OUTREACH OFFICER (Ref. O/084)
The person appointed will play a key role consulting with stakeholders and
users as part of two projects building a resource discovery tool for
geo-spatial data, and an authoritative online British and Irish gazetteer
service to support geographic searching. They will be responsible for
representing a user perspective on the projects, ensuring that user
requirements are matched to the proposed functionality, and contributing to
and carrying out an evaluation plan. They will also be responsible for
developing promotional materials and organising and running a consultation
workshop.
INFORMATION OFFICER (GEO-DATA PORTAL) (Ref. O/085)
The person appointed will play a key role working with the data holders to
produce metadata and agree access conditions as part of a project building a
resource discovery tool that allows the identification and retrieval of
metadata records describing geo-spatial data. They will be responsible for
producing and testing a final version of the metadata standard proposed for
use by the project, and identifying which controlled subject vocabulary
schemes should be used. They will also be responsible for investigating and
reporting on how data holders can be encouraged to provide metadata, how
metadata can be kept up-to-date, and what kind of quality assurance is
required.
INFORMATION OFFICER (GEO-CROSSWALK) (Ref. O/086)
The person appointed will play a key role in defining and exploring the
issues relating to data acquisition, data quality, licensing and costs as
part of a project developing an authoritative online British and Irish
gazetteer service to support geographic searching. They will be responsible
for liasing and consulting with stakeholders and data holders to define the
important issues with respect to data quality, costs and access; and for
reporting on data source quality issues, licensing, maintenance arrangements
and costs. They will also be responsible for contributing to a review of the
gazetteer content standard and feature type thesaurus proposed for use by
the project.
Candidates for all three posts should be educated to degree level or have
equivalent experience in an appropriate subject e.g. the social sciences,
library and information studies, or related disciplines. They will be
computer literate with good communication skills, able to work independently
and as part of a small team. Good time management and prioritisation skills,
with an organised methodical approach to work, as well as problem-solving
skills and the ability to exercise judgement and initiative are also
essential requirements of the post. Knowledge or experience of the use of
geographic information within HE would be an advantage.
Appointment to these full time posts will be for 12 months, and will be in
the range 20,470 - 26,491 pounds sterling per annum.
