LECTURER IN EXERCISE AND HEALTH

Applications are invited for the post of full time lecturer in Exercise and
Health to commence from 1st September 2002 or as soon thereafter as
possible. Teaching will be primarily at Undergraduate level but also on our
well-established MSc in Sports Science (fitness and health) and will include
the supervision of practical classes and research projects. Candidates must
have, or be close to receiving, a PhD in an appropriate discipline.
Relevant teaching experience and research interests will be an advantage as
will professional accreditation (BASES or similar).
The Centre for Sport and Exercise Science is part of the Department of
Biological Sciences, which was graded 4 in the last research assessment
exercise. The Department has close links with the Essex Rivers Health
Authority and will offer a degree in Biomedical Sciences from October 2002.
A number of staff in the department have health-related research interests
in areas such as diabetes, the biochemistry of muscle damage, oxidative
stress, medical microbiology, cancer biology and drug design. The
establishment, from August 2002, of a Department of Health and Human
Sciences reflects the commitment of the University to developments in this
field and further enhances opportunities for collaborative research.
Teaching quality in the Centre for Sport and Exercise Science was rated 24
out of a possible 24 by the Quality Assurance Agency in 2001. The Centre
includes a Human Performance Unit that provides Sports Science support to
athletes of all levels of ability (including those on the World-Class
Performance scheme), and educational services to local schools and colleges.
Three new, comprehensively equipped exercise laboratories were opened in
2001 and the Centre has access to the department's state-of-the-art
analytical equipment.
The salary for this post will be at the appropriate point in the range
£20,470 to £32,537 per annum, depending on experience
