A teaching position will be vacant next academic year at the Université des
Antilles et de la Guyane, in the English department, as " maître de
conférences associé" or "professeur associé". The teaching ( all of which is
done in English) will be focused on British society, and/or XXth century
British history.
The teaching load is the same as in any French university, 192 hours in one
academic year, ie between mid September and late June.
The pay scale depends on the candidate's experience, and corresponds to
140% of the French one.
The Caribbean island of Martinique (pop: 400 000) is part of France, and of
the EU. French laws apply, and the population has the same citizenship and
social rights as in "continental France". The educational system is free.
The health system meets European standards. There are no tropical diseases.
GDP per head is $13 000, but the unemployment rate is 30%. The typical
return air fare to Paris (economy class) costs £350. Researchers in social
policy, political science, ethnic relations, the politics of identity ...
have no difficulty finding topics. A research network with the English
speaking islands of the Caribbean is in operation in the field of social
policy.
