Dear All,
My name is Tim Butcher & am a researcher at Cranfield University in the UK.
I am conducting Action Research within a major UK aerospace manufacturer,
investigating the effect of information systems on roles. My focus is on the
shopfloor interfaces.
Currently I have an issue with my data collection. I am at present using
unstructured interviewing and recording responses via fieldnotes (the
environment is too noisy for tape recording) to fit the data into Task
Models. The issue I have is that with this being action research I am
constantly in discussion with the subjects (iteration) and therefore have
extensive notes, which are incredibly laborious to transcribe. However, I'm
of the opinion that as I will be the only person to read my notes, I have no
need to transcribe them.
Thus my arguement is that my notes are my data and my models are my
evidence.
Firstly do you agree? Secondly, in terms of my thesis what actually
constitutes evidence (i.e. I can't put a stack of interview scripts in my
appendicies, so what other than my models should I use as evidence)?
Many thanks for your time and attention,
Tim Butcher
