LTSN Engineering's Northwest Regional Event
Problem-Based Learning in Engineering
***********************************************

LTSN Engineering warmly invites you to our Northwest Regional Event:

Problem-Based Learning in Engineering
Thursday 7 March 2002 10.00 - 16.00
University of Manchester

The focus of problem-based learning (PBL) is to organise the curricular
content around problem scenarios rather than subjects or disciplines.
Students work in groups or teams to solve or manage these situations but
they are not expected to acquire a predetermined series of 'right answers'.
Instead they are expected to engage with the complex situation presented
to them and decide what information they need to learn and what skills they
need to gain in order to manage the situation effectively.

The Manchester School of Engineering adopted PBL from September 2001 as the
primary teaching method in its undergraduate programmes. This radical
approach has been chosen in order to address:

* The changing skill base of University entrants.
* The needs of industry for graduates with not only a solid foundation of
engineering knowledge but also good communication skills, the ability to
work in a team and to solve problems.

The Northwest Regional Event will provide the opportunity for delegates to
understand Manchester's reasoning behind moving to problem-based learning,
the implementation and resource requirements in doing so and the effect it
has had on admissions. You will also be able to see problem-based learning
in action by experiencing an engineering problem, having a tour of the
facilities and meeting students undertaking PBL.

Further details of this event can be found at
http://www.ltsneng.ac.uk/nef/events/pbl.asp

Everyone is welcome to attend and there is no charge for this event,
however there are only a few places left so it is necessary to register
using the on-line booking form at
http://www.ltsneng.ac.uk/nef/events/event_apply/

We look forward to seeing you in Manchester!
