True, though that particular demo is quite limited as it is little more
than a slide-show. Fine if only want to zoom in on a single location but
not if you want to be able to move anywhere.

True, and that's how I see users with older browsers or slower connections
using any finished system. Some of the other types of interactively that I
would like to use would be a little slow that way for example the timebar
in the BL demo, or the chart in the following demo:

SVG is a very interesting format and one which I have been looking at
actively. Over the next few years a lot of geographic data will be
available in an XML format known as GML (for example all new OS data) and
there exist a number of XML translation templates that will turn GML
directly into SVG.
