I am a bit surprised at some of these download times, but I realise that it
is ages since I ran GeoTools based applets on a PC with no GeoTools
components already cached and over a modem link.
When I get home, I will try to clear out my PC's cache, disconnect it from
the DSL link and try the whole thing over a 56K modem -- but while aspects
of our site clearly have to function well over slow links, I do wonder how
many schools and libraries will be really limited to modem links by the end
of our project.
The GeoTools-based aspects of our site are intended for people who are
going to spend some time exploring our resources, not people doing quick
gazetteer look-ups, and for those with slow links I think the download time
can be justified, especially given the way the underlying classes should
stay cached. Obviously, we need to provide something to look at while the
download happens, to keep people interested.
I have asked James Macgill to join the list and respond to non-download
time related issues -- but I am curious how you would do zooming and
panning with Javascript.
Best wishes,
Humphrey Southall
