medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (16. March) is the feast day of:
Hilarius and Tatian (d. c. 284) According to legend, Hilarius was the
second bishop of Aquileia (N. Italy). He and his deacon Tatian were
martyred by decapitation in the reign of Emperor Numerian.
Julianos of Anazarbos (d. c. 302) Julianos was a senator in Anazarbos
(Cilicia). He was caught up in the Great Persecution, tortured, and
finally stuck into a sack full of scorpions and snakes and thrown into the
sea. Christians recovered the body and conveyed it to Antioch.
Abraham of Chiduna (4th cent.) Abraham is a largely legendary hermit who
lived in Chiduna (Turkey) in the fourth century. He drew interest because
of his unusually ascetic life. Ephraem the Syrian praised Abraham in
hymns, and there is also a 6th-century vita of Abraham.
Mary the Penitent (d. mid-4th cent.) According to tradition, Mary lived an
extremely worldly life until converted by her uncle Abraham of Chiduna.
She then lived with Abraham as a hermit and penitent. Not to be confused
with Mary the Egyptian, whose feast day is on 2. April.
Gregory of Pithiviers (d. c. 1000) Gregory was apparently an Armenian. A
rather uncertain tradition reports that he was a monk and then bishop of
Nikopolis in Armenia. Forced to flee from his homeland, he became a hermit
in Pithiviers near Orleans.
Heribert of Cologne (d. 1021) Heribert was born to a noble Rhineland
family in c. 970. He was educated at the cathedral school of Worms and at
Gorze. In 994 he became Otto III's chancellor for Italy, to which the
chancellorship for Germany was added in 998. In 998 he became archbishop
of Cologne. Heribert's relics were elevated in 1147, and in 1180
transferred to a very impressive gold shrine that still exists.
