Dear list members,
If you received a virus recently in an email from Scott Strachan or other
list members, I would like to reassure you that it did not come via the
list, despite the recent list mail which might suggest otherwise. I would
direct people to my list posting of 1st February 2002:
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/wa.exe?A2=ind0202&L=eye-movement&F=&S=&P=2
52
which explained that the normal vehicles of virus propagation (attachments
or HTML email) were blocked on this list. Email from this list should be
safe from viruses.
Please be very careful when alerting people to viruses, ensuring that you
are certain of the nature and source of the virus. A number of people have
already unsubscribed from the list as a result of the current "scare".
I received a virus this morning from Scott via direct email with the subject
line:
Subject: Re: Re: [EM_LIST] FWD: EyeTracker
thought my antivirus software caught it before it could do any damage. While
this subject line suggests the email has come via the list, my inspection of
the email headers confirmed that it was sent directly to me. List members
should be aware that if one replies to a list posting while changing the To:
line to point to an individual's email address, then the subject line will
still contain the characters [EM_LIST], even though the email is sent
directly to the individual. I suspect that this is where the confusion has
arisen.
For information, the virus was W32/BADTRANS@MM, and it sent itself
automatically to individuals in Scott's address book, without his knowledge.
He appears to have received it from Warren Ward around 22nd December 2001,
similarly without Warren's knowledge. Warren's computer is long-since clear
of the virus.
On a general note, please be wary of attachments, even if they are sent by
someone you know, and be sure that you have uptodate virus checking software
running on your computer. If you are a Microsoft software user, please
download the numerous security patches to both Windows and Office which are
available from the Microsoft website. Don't be an unwitting link in the
chain of virus propagation.
Thanks,
David
