In my view coursework gives students that opportunity to really extend
themselves and work independently. If you take an "Action Research" approach
to it and encourage collaboration and validation through peer questions and
feedback it can be a really enriching experience for them. The important
thing is, I think, to get the question/hypothesis right and for them to
recognise that they should be constantly reviewing their question/hypothesis
in the light of their research findings. To my mind it is the most important
Unit of the course.
