This sounds odd to me. Reviewers are from time to time dropped, usually
quietly, for failing to deliver to deadlines or writing execrable English.
Some just get overlooked, or don't get a turn because there is a surplus of
reviewers relative to the number of books coming out in their field of
expertise. I do not recall having banned anyone for a critical review.
Writers of competing publications are always banned. Although, a number of
good authors have written exceptionally helpful reviews of publications which
don't compete with their own.
It has been known for reviewers to be banned for reasons quite unrelated to
the quality of the reviews they write. In such a case the reviewer would
always have the reasons explained honestly. I do not wish to reopen any such
case at the present time. The majority of reviewers for Teaching Business and
Economics are full-time teachers and in most cases, nearer the beginning than
the end of their teaching careers. Reviewing is a good way to get into
writing and those that want to move on into writing articles or activities or
whatever gain valuable experience that way.
