FIREWEED FEMINIST QUARTERLY
invites submission for our frightfully exciting upcoming issue:
TECHNOLOGY & CLONING
We encourage submissions which subvert and challenge dominant ideology
and propaganda surrounding all aspects of the continuum of reproductive
technologies, eugenics, and cloning. We want to be provided with critical
pieces which will engage us and help us to form a counter-analysis to the
information we are being bombarded with daily, via our various social
institutions. Help fill this feminist void! We are especially (but not
solely) interested in publishing material which deals with:
- an historical overview of genetic research to date
- Dolly and Copycat
- Genetically modified foods. Local and global impact discussions.
- Impact of related research on people of colour and poorer nations.
- Military and wartime applications of human and animal cloning
- Impact of genetic research on the disabled.
- The politics of stem cell research
- The orthodoxy (and promise) of "curing terrible diseases"
- The HGP (Human Genome Project).
- Cloning of pets
- anti-cloning activists locally and internationally
- Bill C-47 and the Canadian government's attempts and interests in
regulating human cloning and related research.
- Spiritual considerations and responses from faith communities.
- The privatisation of health care in Canada and abroad, and how that
impacts who will be an object and who will be a subject of genetic research.
- A critical examination of the Raelian movement and how they are
actively recruiting in queer communities with the idea that human
cloning is an alternative form of human reproduction for gays and
lesbians.
How Dr. Brigitte Boisselieu, chief scientist for the Raelians, and
chemical engineer, is heading up a million dollar team to clone a ten
year old girl (child of members) who died in an accident.
- voices of dissent surrounding the increasingly bio-chemical emphasis on
understanding human behaviour.
- UN and World Health organisation responses to human cloning
- Pharmaceutical profits and financial gain in human cloning and related
research.
and much, much more.....
We invite essays, fiction, prose, fine artwork and graphic art,
photographs and interviews. We especially welcome works from geneticists,
and other medical people working within a feminist and anti-racist
framework.
Sociologists, philosophers, media representatives, activists, members of
social justice organisations, writers, visual and graphic artists, and test
subjects in genetic and human cloning research.
