Yes, I think we were aiming for the equivalent of parsetype="Literal" in
RDF, and I (perhaps naively!) assumed that xs:string would provide this.
And I guess I was also influenced by the fact that the current
OAI-supplied schema for DC uses string as a base type and the "model for
simple DC" cited in my last message.
I've followed your pointer to the XML Schema primer (thanks!) and, yes,
I see the recommendation to use the "text" type:

It looks as if this would also address Jane's concerns for a broader
base type?
Carl, would changing the type for DC elements from string to text impact
adversely on OAI please?
