A small group of people working on the next version of the OAI Protocol for
Metadata Harvesting (version 2.0) have been investigating the possibility of
partitioning the XML schema that the protocol uses to encode simple DC
metadata records into two parts. The group includes Pete Johnston, Carl
Lagoze, Andy Powell and Herbert Van de Sompel.
The intention is to have an OAI-specific XML schema that imports a
DCMI-maintained XML schema. The OAI-specific XML schema defines a container
element for the OAI-DC records - it will be hosted on the OAI Web site. The
DCMI-specific XML schema is associated with the DCMES 1.1 namespace and
defines the 15 DCMES elements - it will be hosted on the DCMI Web site.
The advantage of this approach is that we clearly separate the
application-specific part of the schema from the DCMES 1.1 part of the
schema. Furthermore, the DCMES 1.1 XML schema can be used by (i.e. imported
into) any XML application that wishes to use simple DC wrapped within a
larger schema.
The DCMI-specific XML schema is currently available at
http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/metadata/dcmi/dcxml/xmls/simpledc.xsd
It is proposed that this be hosted on the DCMI Web site at
http://dublincore.org/2002/03/02/simpledc.xsd
Please send your comments on this proposal to the dc-architecture mailing
list by Friday 15th March. We recognize that this is a very short time
line, but it is important to fit this objective into the development cycle
for OAI's metadata harveting protocol. Reaching agreement about this will
benefit both groups.
It is worth noting that this is not a stand-alone XML schema, but rather is
intended to be exported into applications such as OAI that employ
application profiles with compound schemas. DCMI will also maintain other
stand-alone schema representations in both XML-schema and RDF-schema.
