I have found a reference that you may wish to quote.
See Environment Agency/Institute of Petroleum R&D Publication 97 "A
review of current MTBE usage and occurrence in groundwater in England &
Wales" 2000 Chapter 4. It states that "Petrol containing ether
oxygenates has been used in this country since the late 1980's .MTBE is
the most common oxygenate added, but TAME is also used by two
companies".

Subject: MTBE
Dear All,
I wonder if you have time to help me or point me in the right direction
- I am looking for info regarding MTBE, but specifically if anyone knows
when it was actually first used/introduced in the UK, or when it was
first formulated for usage within petrol/fuel.
I have data regarding MTBE, but no definitive introduction date
Any help appreciated
Kind regards
Neil
