Call for papers: 'The Human and the Machine'
National Postgraduate Modern Languages Conference

The forthcoming conference builds on the link established between Modern La=
nguages
postgraduates at the Universities of Bristol and Exeter. Papers are also we=
lcomed from=20
postgraduate linguists at other UK institutions.

Contributions are invited on any aspect of literary and cultural studies wi=
thin Modern Languages.=20
Specific themes may include, but are not limited to, the following:
=B7 The human/ the human body as machine, or the machine as human
=B7 The machine (and technology) as an enhancement of human life
=B7 The machine as present or absent in utopian models or visions
=B7 The use of machines/technology in cinema and theatre production, or the=
visual arts, book writing and publishing
=B7 Gender and technology or reproductive technologies=20
=B7 The machine as a social, economic or political construct
=B7 Machine-aided translation or linguistics=20
Accepted papers will be 20-25 minutes long. Publication of conference proce=
edings is expected.=20
