UMIST
Centre for HCI Design
DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTATION
SENIOR LECTURER AND LECTURERS IN HCI
Applications are invited for research oriented lecturing posts in Human
Computer Interaction and Systems Engineering. The Centre currently has
five staff, Professor Alistair Sutcliffe, Drs Leon Watts, Jock
McNaught, Bill Black and Sri Kurniawan, 7 research staff plus several
post graduate students. The Centre focuses on HCI-in-the-large, (user
centred design of socio-technical systems) as well as HCI-in-the-small
(design of interactive artefacts). Our research has a strong commitment
to theory, in the context of developing practical methods, techniques
and tools. Research falls into two broad areas.
* Cognitive engineering and interactive system design, applied to
interactive technologies (virtual reality, multimodality, multimedia,
collaborative and ubiquitous computing) across a range of application
areas (information retrieval, safety critical systems, assistive
technology and eCommerce).
* Systems Engineering-, socio technical systems design, human factors in
systems engineering, modelling complex socio technical system,
collaboration in the systems engineering process, methods and tools for
scenario based Requirements Engineering.
We are looking for researchers who wish to join an expanding team with
interests in the above areas, however we also encourage applications
from researchers with interests in any area of HCI, CSCW, or Socio
Technical Systems Design.. Further details of the Centre for HCI
Design can be found at http://www.co.umist.ac.uk/hci_design/index.htm

Press Advert
UMIST is a centre of excellence in engineering, science, technology, and
management. The Department of Computation has an established
international teaching and research reputation with strong industrial
links. Its graduates are highly rated by employers. The Department is
seeking to expand by making appointments in the general research areas
of: Artificial Intelligence, Assistive Technology, Data Engineering,
Human Computer Interaction and Information Systems.
The Senior Lecturer post provides the opportunity for the appointee to
develop their research leadership within a large department, in the
environment of a research-led university. Applicants should be able to
demonstrate their research achievements and potential through an
appropriate publication record, supervision of research activity and
research funding.
The Lecturer posts provide the opportunity for new appointees to develop
their research profiles. The department provides excellent support for
new Lecturers to develop industrial links. Applications from recent PhD
graduates with evidence of strong research potential are also welcome
for these posts.
Successful applicants will be required to contribute to the research,
teaching and administrative activities of the Department. All staff are
allocated a balanced teaching load, although for new Lecturers this will
be reduced to allow them to develop their research activities.
You may informally contact the Head of Department, Professor Linda
Macaulay ([log in to unmask]).
Salaries will be within the Lecturer scale (£20,470-£32,537 per annum)
and Senior Lecturer scale (£34,158-£38,603 per annum).
For an application form and further details please write to: The
Personnel Office, UMIST, PO Box 88, Manchester M60 1QD, enclosing a
