Association Football:
British Game, Global Passion
One Day Conference
25 March 2002
at The National Football Museum, Preston
The Department of Tourism and Leisure Management in partnership with the National Football Museum is launching the first in a series of annual conferences related to football. The conference is unique, combining an academic programme with a tour of the National Football Museum that is home to the world's greatest football collection and presents the "true story of the world's greatest game."
Conference Aims
The conference will deal with social / historical themes and allow delegates to reflect on the presentations whilst exploring detailed evidence held in the Museum's extensive collections.
In addition, the year 2002 represents a crucial milestone in the history of the world's most popular sport. For the first time the World Cup Final will be hosted in Asia, testament to the fact that the game has become truly global, arousing immense passion all over the world. The conference will explore the social, cultural and political significance of the game throughout the world. As recognition of Britain's role as the founding fathers of the game, the conference will address the significance of football in the British Isles. Issues such as the British Football Association's difficulties in coming to terms with the rapid globalisation of the game, increased governmental involvement in football in Northern Ireland and football and regional identity in the North West corner of England will be addressed. These issues will be supported by the displays, collections and artefacts held in the museum.
The conference is aimed at those interested in the social, cultural and political aspects of Association Football and its historical development. It will also appeal to those interested in the game and who wish to view the museum whilst gaining a deeper understanding of football's development nationally and globally.
The conference will also coincide with the recent launch of a textbook authored by one of the keynote speakers. The text 'Africa, Football and FIFA: Politics, Colonialism and Resistance' written by Paul Darby and published by Frank Cass, will be available on the day.
