Hi
ThamesPilot have bought the Minolta Dimage 7 last November. Like you we are
capturing a variety of objects in museums and libraries. Many of these items
are not suitable to be scanned and a digital camera was thought to be the
best option.
The quality of the shots is excellent. I was advised that this camera was a
good choice for use in archives as the lens wasn't changeable and therefore
no dust would get on the CCD and affect the images. The camera looks
complicated but is in fact easy to use, it is also lightweight which is
important for us as we will be taking it to lots of different sites.
The main problems are the lack of memory - we had to buy a bigger card as
the one supplied would only hold 1 TIFF file at a time, the batteries wear
out very quickly - they are rechargeable and we bought the mains adaptor,
and the shutter speed is slower than some other cameras - this isn't a
problem for us as we are not taking action shots.
The only problem I have left now is how to take pictures of images behind
glass without the reflections - any suggestions?

I am interested in knowing what digital camera other projects are using,
and how you would rate the cameras that you're using. We are considering
buying a new digital camera, but obviously this is an expensive item and it
would be nice to have some advice. The camera will be used to take
photographs of museum objects.
