Any objection to my copying the pottery string to PotWeb (referred to by
Kate F yesterday)? PotWeb, as visitors to the site will know, is addressing
the question of presenting the Ashmolean's sherd assemblages in succinct
form. My hesitation is that list members might hear the terms `vessel
equivalents' and `sherd families', which is the way ceramicists talk
nowadays. But those of us with field experience will realise that the
archaeological significance of a single complete vessel from a deposit is
substantially less than that of twenty grotty sherds from same deposit, and
scientifically the concept of assemblage is vital, even if the term is open
to debate. - Brian
