My own research adapts this approach to look at theological competition within
(rather than between) religious organizations.
Well I did this sort of thing in my Hull University 1989 Ph.D New
Denominationalism: Tendencies Towrads a New Reformation of English
Christianity, that in Britain the divisions within churches are greater than those
between them, which I divide up into heredox liberalism, orthodox liberalism,
traditionalisms, and conversionism, each of which except orthodox liberalism
overlap with non-mainstream denominations, and each of which have differing
forms of authority (understood sociologically).
