Dear Max et al,
In KJ No 21 March 1932 - in the fith part of a glossary of Sussex words
((based I imagineon Parrish's work) the following is given
WILDISHER - n. a native of open country ?
it gives the quote from An Habitation " Here folk come out of the ground,
neither chalk nor forest, but wildishers"
Chalk (of the Downs) and forest (the cover of the Weald - a variety of
rocks - sands, sandstones and clays)
whereas the O.E.D. gives for widlish - "somewhat wild - inclining to
wildness" It doesn't give this specific term.
Best wishes Michael
