medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
James,
The depiction of Christ with a body prior to the Incarnation is not
heretical in the eyes of the Church, at least not the Eastern Church. E.g.,
one of the most famous icons is the Theotokos of the Sign, which depicts the
Blessed Virgin with arms aloft and the pre-Incarnate no less possessing a
body within her womb. This icon takes its name from Is 7:14, the "sign"
being the miraculous conception of Christ by the Blessed Virgin.
