medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Groundhog Day (I've been informed that the "'s" isn't proper, with the
authority of the Bill Murray movie "Groundhog Day" cited at me) is a
weather-predicting day. If the groundhog comes out of its hole and sees
its shadow (aka, if the sun is shining today) it'll go back into hiding,
and there will be another six weeks of winter. There's even an official
U.S. groundhog somewhere on the east coast who always gets some media
attention today.
I discovered a few years ago that this is a German folk belief (not
associated with groundhogs), one of those handy reminders that an awful lot
of early immigrants in America were German:
"Ist's an Lichtmess hell und rein,
wird ein langer Winter sein"
