medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Mary,
You are right about *Jacob's Well* and its reference to the woods of the
cross. In Capitulum 70 the preacher states that the cross was composed of
four woods: cedar, cypress, olive, and palm. He associates a particular
significance with each of the woods and cites Bonaventure as his source
although I haven't found a reference to this in Bonaventure. I am preparing
a paper for Kalamazoo on this subject and have just begun my research in
trying to trace the sources for these woods. I don't know when you need an
answer, but I'll let you know if I turn up something before 1100.
