medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (12. February) is the feast day of:
Mardi Gras (Shrove Tuesday, Carnival, Fasching)---the ultimate in feasting
days of the year, preparatory to the beginning of Lent on Wednesday.
Especially noteworthy in the area around New Orleans. It's even a holiday
at my university (!) Seriously, does anyone know when Christians started
celebrating this holiday? Or Lent, for that matter?
the 10,000 martyrs (d. c. 300) Two different groups of martyrs have the
same name. The group celebrated today appears in the Martyrium Romanum as
a large group of soldiers executed along with Bishop Anthimos of Nicomedia
by being thrown off a cliff at Diocletian's orders. (There's a great
Albrecht Durer painting on the theme.) The other group, celebrated on 22
June, is a group of 10,000 soldiers who according to legend were crucified
on Mt. Ararat.
Meletios of Antioch (d. 381) Meletios, born in Melitene (Armenia), became
bishop of Sebaste in 358 and patriarch of Antioch in 360. He was deeply
involved in the Arian controversy and was kicked out of his see by Arians,
only able to return to office in 378.
Humbelina (blessed) (d. 1135) Humbelina, born in c. 1093, was the sister
of Bernard of Clairvaux. She was prioress of the Benedictine convent
Jully-sur-Sarce, but actively promoted her brother's Cistercian order. She
died in her brother's arms. Humbelina was beatified in 1703.
Antony of Saxony and companions (d. 1369) (not formally canonized) Antony
and four other Franciscans went on a preaching mission in Bulgaria.
Adherents of the Orthodox church killed them as heretics.
