italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
To Leah,
re: MS finding list
Sounds like this would indeed be a valuable tool. I have found in my own
work with late medieval vernacular Italian texts in prose that very often
such "obvious" reference tools are lacking. It takes a great deal of time,
legwork (in the case of unpublished & uncatalogued MS exemplars), and
patience to assemble such a list. I would suggest beginning, as you have,
with secondary, published sources. Also draw on articles written about
individual MSS. SOmetimes an article about a miscellany or about one
aspect of a MS may contain a complete description of contents. That is
another way to track down such texts.
See the indices for published MS catalogues such as Mazzatinti. Often
individual poems are listed. There are numerous miscellanies of poems in
Florentine libraries. Many times the codex itself may date to '400, but
may contain texts composed in the '300. Again, it takes time/patience to
search for these things.
The French journal SCRIPTORIUM has an index which includes mention of MSS,
as does the Internatl. Medieval Bibliography (now available on CD-ROM as
well as hardcopy volumes).
If you get to travel to Italy, the individual libraries maintain wonderful
"schede" (catalogue cards) for each codex. These will show articles, books
that refer to the codices. A useful way to track down other related
information.
Have you also checked the IUPI for incipits of the poems?
Happy Hunting!
