UNIVERSITY OF SURREY, SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING
CENTRE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGY
Research Fellow in Environmental Life Cycle Management (Ref: 3257)
Salary: £19,486 - £24,193 per annum
[Three year post in the first instance]
The Centre for Environmental Strategy (CES), University of Surrey, is a
multi-disciplinary postgraduate research centre (rated 5A in the 2001
Research Assessment Exercise). Its focus is the interaction of humans with
their environment, and identification of sustainable solutions to
environmental problems.
A particular research strength is the development and use of environmental
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for which CES is internationally renowned. This
has been recognised by the award of a substantial EPSRC grant to develop a
training package targeted at industrial managers, designers and engineers,
and leading to a Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma/M.Sc. in Environmental
Life Cycle Management. It will involve an intensive residential short
course, specialist group workshops, an annual conference, and independent
learning using interactive software packages and web-based materials. The
aim is to build a UK network of LCM practitioners able to respond
proactively and creatively to the challenges of future environmental
legislation.
CES is also participating in an EU research programme called ISACOAT whose
aim is to develop a methodology for assessing the sustainability of future
scenarios for the metals coating sector, taking a life cycle view of
environmental, economic and social aspects.
The Research Fellow will work on both of these projects and in addition
will be given the opportunity to develop their own research agenda. The
successful applicant will have a thorough understanding of LCA methodology
and experience in undertaking LCA studies. You will enjoy teaching,
particularly one-to-one and in small groups, and have excellent
organisational skills. In addition, it will be helpful if you have
experience in development of distance-learning materials (particularly
IT-based ones), and in marketing of Continual Professional Development
courses.
