Dear Becky,
The Portable Antiquities programme have a similar requirement to give
SMRs, and others, quick and simple access to their data. They're looking
into data exchange with SMRs - it would be worthwhile for you to talk to
Andrew Sargeant or Roger Bland.
But you could also think about making your data available on the
Internet through HEIRPORT - see http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/heirport/. This is
a new service, developed for HEIRNET, which allows several different
databases to be searched at the same time. The Portable Antiquities
database is one of the databases that are searched, others include the
NMR for Scotland, the ADS catalogue and SCRAN. More databases will be
added in future and it could offer a way of giving quick and simple
access to the MOD SMR.
Whichever route you take, access to your data will always be easier to
provide if your database complies with MIDAS and you adopt the data
standards and terminology lists recommended for SMRs.
If you'd like to talk more about HEIRPORT, or help in finding suitable
technical advice please don't hesitate to get in touch.
with best wishes,
Kate Fernie
