Tim,
As I understand it, the old OS field numbers are still used. However, as a result of the introduction of IACS (The Integrated Administration and Control System), MAFF (now DEFRA) assumed the responsibility for the derivation of all land parcel numbers in England and Wales in 1995. Since this date, where an area has been re-surveyed and a field boundary has changed, the parcel number will have changed or, at the discretion of the surveyor, been removed altogether. Consequently, Ordnance Survey no longer maintains the current land parcel numbers on large-scale mapping.
The current system for defining land parcel numbers is based upon the 8-figure grid reference for the centre of the field, thus creating a 10 digit reference, but not in the way we would normally cite an 8-figure NGR.
For example, a field in North Yorkshire for which the central NGR is SE 6739 8004, would have the land parcel no. SE 6780 3904 - separating off the four figures which indicate the nearest km square, followed by the four figures which represent the 10m square.
Further information is available in a booklet which is referenced on the DEFRA website entitled 'Procedures for obtaining field numbers and total field areas', (IACS 23), although I cannot find a downloadable copy of this on the web.
Presumably these numbers will only stay the same until someone decides to change the system again!

Dear All
Does anyone know whether OS parcel numbers are fixed in stone or do they
change over time? I am writing an SMR manual and I need to know whether/how
to record them and how to treat the records we already have.
Cheers
Tim
