URBAN SPACES - MODERN SUBJECTS
The Emergence of Modernity in European Urban Centers
May 16-18, 2002
Graduate students in the humanities and social sciences are encouraged to
submit abstracts of papers that examine the development of modern cities
and the impact of modernization on cultural consciousness. This conference
will explore the effects of rapid urbanization and the rise of modern mass
culture at the fin de siecle and into the first half of the 20th century. German
speaking cities will be the focus of the discussion, but we strongly encourage
cross-cultural submissions that involve other European centers.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
-The city as center of decadence
-Visual culture
-Modern gender construction
-Bodies in motion (flaneurie)
-1900-2000 : a century of the city
-Reactions to urbanization
-Spatial conceptions of Modernity: art, architecture and urban planning
-Technology, mass media, and modern spectacle
-German emigre/exile communities in foreign cities
-The emergence of the New Woman
-Urban themes in modern literature
Travel subsidies are available on a competitive basis.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS FEBRUARY 22, 2002
This conference will be held in affiliation with the larger academic
conference Urban Spaces- Modern Subjects: European metropoles at the
fin de siecle. The graduate student conference will take place on the
first day of the conference, followed by panels and presentations by
scholars in the field, a teaching colloquium, and other activities.
