UNIVERSITY OF SALZBURG
DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH AND AMERICAN STUDIES
CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS:
DRAMA TRANSLATION AND THEATRE PRACTICE
24-27 October 2002
From Thursday, 24 October 2002 after lunch until Sunday, 27 October 2002
after lunch a conference will be held under the auspices of the Department
and organised by Sabine Coelsch-Foisner and Holger Klein, on the subject of
drama translation and theatre practice.
The conference language will be English both as regards the papers and the
ensuing discussions.
In order to get a proper focus on the subject and to enable all participants
to appreciate the arguments, only translations into English will be
considered. There exists a certain tension between translations of drama and
performance of such translations on stage, with some translators never
envisaging production, others giving it some thought, and still others
gearing their entire translation work to performance in the theatre. Very
often directors change and adapt existing translations – another dimension
to be considered. Papers will study test cases – no matter from what
period – and/or theoretical implications. The Centre offers a wide range of
audiovisual facilities; speakers may wish to use them to illustrate their
points.
Papers will be 30 minutes (maximum), immediately followed by 15 minutes of
discussion. In each session of the conference two papers will be given and
discussed.
The conference will be held at the Bildungshaus St Virgil, an education
centre situated on the slopes of the hills just outside the city and within
easy reach of the historic parts of Salzburg. Participants are lodged at the
Centre and take their meals there, so that discussions can continue
informally between and after sessions.
Before Christmas 2002 papers may be submitted for publication in hard-copy
and on disk (MS DOS Windows 87 or newer, in any case IBM or IBM-compatible).
A volume of conference papers will be published within about eighteen
months after the conference.
If you are interested in this conference and wish to offer a paper or take
part as a general participant - something which is always welcome, of
course - please contact by the end of February 2002:
