New Challenges: New Answers?
Germany at the Start of the 21st Century
Goethe Institut, London
10 April 2002
Call for Papers
Germany faces a multitude of new challenges at the start of the 21st.
century. These challenges are evident in all aspects of contemporary German
life. The new century has spawned fresh questions concerning, for example,
Germany's role in Europe and the wider world, the challenge of making a
success of the new European currency, overcoming what appears to be a
global economic downturn, issues of asylum and immigration spawned by
success, Balkan Wars and, more broadly, Germany's willingness and ability
to act as a leader in the process of European integration.
However, many old questions still haunt Germany and find resonance in
today's debates on German identity and its economic, cultural and political
situation. Thus the central theme of this conference will be to explore the
extent to which the challenges facing Germany in the new century are really
new issues or whether the most pertinent issues facing Germany in the 21st
century are still those that preoccupied Germany during the post war
period. In short, does the 21st Century present such a turning point for
Germany, and if so, what new questions and answers are evident?
Thus we invite contributions dealing with this theme and as usual we hope
that the Grad Net conference can attract papers from as many fields and
perspectives as possible. Any postgraduates wishing to present a paper
should submit an abstract of not more than 150 words to either:
Tom Dyson ([log in to unmask]) or Silke Pottebohm ([log in to unmask])
before 20 February 2002.
We look forward to any comments and responses you may have as well as
to hearing your papers!
