Hi Pam and Everyone,
This sounds a very interesting area of study and one that relates
somewhat to my own field of interest. I suspect you will find that
there has been very little formal work done on the impact of vision loss
during employment or on the impact of vision loss on those seeking
employment. I certainly don't recall seeing anything directly related
to this topic.
My own work is on self-employment of people who are visually
impaired. This includes those who have a congenital condition, such as
my own cataract, as well as those with deteriorating conditions, such as
RP. My work is still at the research proposal stage, but it is my
intention to carry out an extensive set of case studies on people who
are visually impaired and are in or have aspired to self-employment.
Clearly it would be helpful to know the nature of their visual
impairment, so I might be able to share some useful data with you.
The Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) is making a major
thrust in the employment field here in the UK. One prong of that thrust
is employment retention, which will probably produce information
relevant to your work.
Laurence's comments on his reaction to obscured vision are
interesting. People often ask me if things look blurred to me, whereas
I can't actually see the detail that would be blurred. However, had I
ever had unimpaired vision, I'm sure things would now look blurred to
me.
Pam, we should talk more off list.
Cheers,
Brendan.
