Jamie,
A thought provoking article that might be of interest to you: Stainton,
T. (2001). Reason and Value: the thought of Plato and Aristotle and the
construction of intellectual disability. Mental Retardation, Vol. 39
(6), pp. 452-460. Tim Stainton is a Senior Lecturer at the Univesity of
Wales, Swansea; and a Visiting Associate Professor at the University of
British Columbia, Vancouver.
The article deals with the construction of disability and the debate
over the essential humanity of people with disability (or bearing in
mind the multiplicity of views on this list, 'disabled people') in
western society with reference to the works and influence of Plato and
Aristotle, together with their influence on the writings of Augustin,
Aquinas, Luther and (dare I say in the same breath), Peter Singer.
Cheers,
Keith
