Landscapes of inhabitation, taskscapes of tradition: contextualising
settlement and routine in prehistory.
30th March 2002
A joint meeting of the Prehistoric Society and the Lithics Studies
Society
University of Wales College, Newport (Caerleon), Department of
Archaeology
and Prehistory
This day school aims to promote the development of nuanced accounts
of
lived routines in prehistory. Descriptions of prehistoric life have
tended
to be reduced to abstracted schemes such as settlement pattern
and
typology, often operating at broad temporal scales. Past landscapes
were
viewed as constraints upon human behaviour, or simply an economic
resource.
Such writing misses the rhythms, routines and fluidity of social
life.
Papers covering the Mesolithic through to the Iron Age will explore ways
of
putting people, and their engagements with other beings and the world(s)
in
which they lived, firmly into our accounts of landscapes, lithics
and
occupation. This meeting is intended to be an informal forum for
discussion
for archaeologists from universities, field units, curatorial
organisations
and museums, to explore some recent ideas regarding landscapes
and
taskscapes, and to discuss how these interpretative approaches can
inform
and transform future fieldwork, publication and presentation.
