Overall, there seem to be common methodological flaws and weaknesses which make drawing useful conclusions difficult.
However, the research findings do suggest that mechanical traction appears to be no more effective than other methods, but potentially more dangerous for patients, and that its continued use should be questioned.
If you are UK based it would be worth reading a letter in the current issue of Frontline (6 Feb 2002) p 29 in which concerns are raised about the limited effect which available consistent evidence has in changing practice. Traction is mentioned in this letter.
Hope this is helpful

Subject: Traction information
Hi all,
Have to do a presentation for the department on mechanical traction
(guidlines, proposed effects, clinical effectiveness). Does anyone have any
ideas on up to date journal articles or sources of info. Thanks in advance.
MIKE
