Interested Colleagues are cordially invited to:
THE INTERCULTURE PROJECT WORKSHOP
VENUE: Room M, LaTiS Centre, Queen's Building, University of Exeter
DATE: Friday, 1 March 2002
TIME: 9.30-11.00 (students) and 11.30-1.00 (staff)
The Interculture Project has been funded by HEFCE through the FDTL. Our
broad objective was "To develop intercultural and socio-linguistic competence
for periods of study and work abroad". We undertook original research, the
most important result of which is a series of searchable databases of
authentic student accounts of their experiences abroad, in the form of
transcriptions of diaries, questionnaire responses, interviews and focus
groups. We developed a wide range of learning activities using this material
in various ways, and we also developed other learning activities and materials
in the course of the project, such as country-specific intercultural quizzes
and "intercultural incidents". We have looked specifically at the countries
France, Germany, Italy and Spain but feel our work is more generally
applicable to Residence Abroad for anyone.
The workshop at the University of Exeter will consist of:
* a session for students including an introduction to our website and a
sample preparation session using our materials (1.5 hours). Staff would be
welcome to observe.
* tea/coffee/water/biscuits for all -- staff and students
* a hands-on session with staff, looking at the project's materials in some
detail (1.5 hrs)
* lunch for any staff who wish to discuss things further
The staff and student audience we have in mind would
include:
* staff in any department with responsibilities for Residence Abroad co-
ordination / preparation / support etc.
* students who will be undertaking Residence Abroad
* students who have already undertaken Residence Abroad
If you are interested in attending this workshop, please e-mail me
([log in to unmask]), indicating whether or not you wish to stay for lunch. I
can also provide information on travelling to Exeter and locating the LaTiS
centre.
For further information on the content of the workshop, please contact
Jessica Abrahams ([log in to unmask]).
Thanks.
