Please go ahead with the formal process - if the President of ESA has
promised to take up the issue with the executive (soon). A
petition/expression of concern by sociologists should be started with, we
hope, a good number of Israeli and Palestinian signatories. Something along
the lines:
As professional social scientists, aware of the crucial role of information
(data) in social construction, we deplore the attack by the IDF on the
Palestine Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) in early December 2001 and the
destruction of equipment and data held by this institution. We call on all
Israelis and Palestinians of inflence to add their names to ours, and to
call upon the Israeli government and military authorities to apologise and
to provide some form of restitution.
