John,
We have some bypass protocols for trauma patients in the greater Belfast
area but basically what they say is that all patients with multiple trauma
and/or head and chest injuries should be brought straight to the Royal as it
has the relevant specialties for all types of serious injuries. There was
some difficulty with the ambulance service at first but over the last few
years they have complied with this directive enthusiastically - as you might
expect, there is a degree of over-triage but we willingly accept this. Give
me a call if you want to talk further about this.
Rocky.
