I do not feel particularly strongly about this
The entitled patients exist (doctors, lawyers, medical students,
managers, politicians etc etc)
in the main they are understandingly using whatever angle they have to
ensure that they get good treatment. It is not always about jumping the
queue. They are worried that they could be "stuffed up" by some junior
doctor. Having a coping strategy for the "entitled" patient is a skill
we all have to acquire.
What annoys me more are the "chattering classes" who denigrate the
Emergency Department as a place they would certainly never go to by
choice (The sort of thing you pick up when taking their kids to the posh
school. Kids tend to repeat their parents conversations in the back of
the car)
When they or their children actually end up in the public hospital ED as
patients (as we all do despite the private sector )they are bloody
terrified!!!

I don't believe 'bumping' staff or management to the front of the queue
is
ethically acceptable - the only exception would be to get them back to
the
'front line' quicker if they were needed desperately.
I'm afraid I would have refused to treat the othopod's son out of turn
and
would consider the incident needed reporting.
I twisted my ankle badly a few years ago and had to sit in a Manchester
A&E
for over 3 hours waiting to be seen. I did not try to jump the queue,
but
waited my time with the other punters.
I learnt a lot about how the service appears from the 'other side'
(actually
I thought the service I got was very good!).
It is vital staff, managers (and politicians) don't avoid this
experience of
being a 'normal' patient in the NHS. otherwise how can they possibly
know
how to guide the service.
