If you are looking at hillforts in built-up areas, then at least five of the
hillforts in Hampshire could I think come into that category (Balksbury
Camp, Bury Ring - both on the edge of Andover; Chilworth Ring - just to the
north of Southampton; St Catherine's Hill - by the M3 here in Winchester and
Winklebury Camp - Basingstoke). Many other hillforts are within 0.5km of
built-up areas or other development. Some have development within them.

Subject: Hillforts in urban contexts
We have had a query which I'm not able to answer - anyone got any
suggestions?
We have a fine hillfort, right next to the M1 (on the Sheffield side) called
Winco Bank. The questioner thinks it is unique in being the only hillfort
lying entirely within a modern city boundary. Racking my brains, such as
they are, hasn't come up with any others, with the exception of possible use
of Edinburgh Castle rock prior to the castle.
Does anyone know of other examples? I have asked a member of the Hillfort
Studies Group, but he couldn't suggest any others.
Regards
Jim
