Hi Pam and others
I participated in a research project which was undertaken by the School of
Applied Vision Sciences (Orthoptics) here at the faculty of Health Sciences,
University of Sydney. I don't know if its relevant but the research was to
ascertain the amount of vision required to function as a firefighter in NSW
Australia. Apparently, people who had been doing volunteer firefighting for
years and had then applied to become paid firefighters in the Fire Brigade
had been quite miffed that they were knocked back on their visual acuity.
There had been no research done to determine exactly how much vision is
required to do the job safely. I was surprised when my vision was obscured
during the research at what I couldn't see eg. powerlines down, cracks in
buildings that were on fire, warning labels on chemical tins, measurements
on guages, map reading, and so many other things that were imperative to
safety. The chief researcher was Neryla Jolly (or Jolley)

Subject: Adventitious Versus Congenital Vision Loss
> Hi everyone

> I am beginning a research project for my Masters in Rehabilitation Studies

on

> By way of a little background to help place me and my project in context:
> Although I had poor partial sight up until around my mid 20s, I am now
> totally blind, with some slight light perception.

> I have a fulltime job as Manager of a supported employment programme for
> people with significant disabilities, within the New Zealand Public
Service.
>
> I'm just wondering if anyone out there has any good material on barriers
to

> Any references or electronic texts most welcome indeed!
